Chapter 1
AWAKENING
OUR LITTLE GROUP was already sloshed, but my boyfriend wanted another drink, so I was elected to fight the crowd. I told him I got the last round, but he said, "Shut up, Josh. Just get the fucking drinks."
So I circled around the dance floor and made my way through the noisy crowd, the pounding music, and the smell of fresh sweat and cologne.
I liked the look of the club. It had a carnival-like decor, classy and clean, with a big dance floor and a flashy light show. And plenty of people.
This nightclub, and the city itself, was new territory for all of us. My friends and I had just driven up to St. Louis for the weekend.
As soon as I got in line for drinks, I noticed the guy at the bar. He was sitting on a stool, looking out over the crowd.
Intriguing.
And more fascinating the longer I watched him. There was just something extraordinary about him. He was handsome, but in a unique way, his way. His own look. I could see right off he was at peace with himself. He radiated warmth, tranquility.
I liked his attitude, too: self-confident, but not arrogant. He was relaxed, casually dressed, fit looking, and sexy as hell. He just drew me in, everything about him. Even his baseball cap.
A totally straight-looking guy, in a gay bar. Well, by that time of night it was an after-hours bar; half the people there were straight. So he probably was, too, but I just couldn't keep my eyes off him.
He saw me looking and smiled. Smiled so warmly, so openly, I smiled right back at him before I had time to get embarrassed.
